Frequently asked questions
Do you accept insurance?
I am considered an out-of-network provider for most insurance companies. The majority of my clients find that they are able to be reimbursed for a portion or all of what they pay for my services. I am happy to submit insurance claims on your behalf or provide you with a superbill (insurance receipt) to submit to your insurance company. Either way, if you have nutrition counseling benefits, you will be reimbursed directly by your insurance company.
Why aren’t you an in-network provider?
There are several reasons for this:
I feel my resources (time, attention, brain space) are better used serving my clients. I spend my time outside of sessions coordinating with the rest of your care team, participating in trainings, seeking supervision and bettering the services my practice offers.
I value your privacy. Being in-network with insurance companies means that I may have to share your protected health information with them any time they request it for purposes of confirming “medical necessity” or performing an audit.
Insurance companies, as key stakeholders in our broader medical systems, uphold oppressive frameworks such as using the BMI to determine the “medical necessity” of eating disorder treatment.
Having good insurance is a privilege in the United States and many people who need access to nutrition counseling are uninsured or underinsured. Being an in-network provider means that I am agreeing to be paid a rate by the insurance company that may be lower than my customary rate. Instead, charging and being paid a rate that provides me with a living wage allows me to offer reduced fee sessions to clients who would otherwise not be able to see me, even if I accepted insurance.
Do you offer appointments in person or via telehealth?
At this time, all services are offered via telehealth only. There are some restrictions for telehealth based on the state you reside in. Please ask during your phone consultation if you have questions concerning requirements for telehealth services. Currently I see clients who live in the states of Washington, Virginia and North Carolina. If you live in another state, please reach out as I may be able to see you depending on your state’s current licensure laws and telehealth standards.
Do you see adolescents?
My services are for adults (18+) only at this time. I am happy to provide referrals for dietitians who work with those under 18 years old.
What is Health at Every Size® (HAES®)?
In a nutshell, this means that I believe all bodies are deserving of care regardless of size or health status. This is an evolving framework that rejects our medical system’s insistence that weight is a valid measure of health status and that seeks to dismantle discriminatory and oppressive frameworks of care. Please visit the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) website to learn more. You can also find me, and many other amazing HAES® informed providers on their Healthcare Provider Listing.
